Blue House, 2019
If you take a closer look at this wall hanging, you will see the house motif, in repetitive motions, creating a whole. Woven before the world stood still, the time when we had to be in our homes, unable to leave or even to invite anyone in, lest we infected others or were inadvertently infected by them.
Four walls and a roof, as a child would draw a house, can be a sanctuary or a prison, depending on how you look at it. A place of solace or discord. Mostly, the embodiment of domesticity, normally attributed to the female gender. In Ali's own words; 'the house motif represents a symbol of home as a place of refuge but also alienation'.
This unique woven piece made from cotton, ramie and horse hair. It is a piece that would be perfect hanging on a narrow wall.
